The three gringas

Sheroke's here!!!
Jessi's here!!!

Yes, you heard it right. There has been three of us lately!!! Thank you Lord to such an answer to prayer. Sheroke Meyer came for the last 2 weeks in August and Jessi Miller is here and will be here for the next 8 months!! Yes, you heard right 8 months having an American, Christian girl living with me!!! So exciting! So we have been having a blast. When Sheroke was here, we had a great mix of doing ministry, having time to just talk as girls, doing tourist things, and having several game nights. We got to celebrate Peruvian's birthdays when she was here, her 24th birthday, and just have SO much fun together. Being all three of us together it was like a party every night!!!

It is so cool how God brings things together. The past 8 months of being alone has been good for me to learn and just to have a time of being here in Peru alone, yet God fulfilling my every need. Yet, I am so glad for this  new season of God bringing help from my own home country here!!! In June or maybe it was July I was really depressed one day and looking through my phone on my day off of people that I  could call and talk to. I decided that I would call Sheroke. We had not talked on the phone in a long time, we had kept in contact a little through facebook, but that was about it. Sheroke worked with me at mission Arlington in the summer of 2008. She was amazing, and we work really well together. Let's just say she can put up with my crazy self and keeps me organized! It is amazing! Anyway, I told her she should think about coming to Peru and she should move here and work with me. God is so amazing! If I remember right, 3 weeks after that phone call she had talked to her church, they had paid for her whole trip to come, went to get her passport, and her shots, and like 3 weeks after that she was here! It was such a huge encouragement from the Lord. What a miracle!!! It was so cool how the Lord brought her to me in the summer of 2008, when I was literally going crazy with trying to take summer school and work full time at mission Arlington, the Lord basically used her to hold me together that summer. She did all the planning for all our Bible studies and summer programs that summer and was the most flexible servant hearted person ever. It is so cool how the Lord once again 4 summers later, when I just needed an encouragement brought her back to my aide again. I love how the Lord works. Sheroke and I only worked together one summer at mission Arlington, and the next summer she came to visit for a few days, and yet God would bring her all the way down to Peru to visit me again for another time in the summer!!

This was her first time to be out of the country and her first time on a plane! She did a great job! She tried all kinds of new foods, connected with people in our discipleship group, made Peruvian music videos haha, really encouraged Fernando in his faith, tried to teach Nicchola about the country life haha and american football, helped prepare everything for our first youth night, was in the skit for our first youth night, gave us the idea to prayer walk a place where we have a lot of spiritual warfare - and did the prayer walk with us,  helped with the lessons plans for the week (somethings never change lol), encouraged me, and so much more! We are hoping that maybe God will bring her back long term!!! :) Love you so much Sheorke!!

Sheroke is doing her masters in military history, so we went and tried to do a lot of history things while she was here. We went to the inquisition musuem, the metropolitan musem (which is the history of Lima), Real Felipe (a Peruvian fort), went to the parque de aguas (a beautiful park with all kinds of cool water fountains), went to Centro de Lima, went to the top of a Mountain where there is a big cross that looks out all over Lima, went to like a place that is kind of like China Town in downtown Lima, went to Mira Flores, and I am sure I am forgetting some other things, and not to forget we ate tons and tons of Churros together.

Jessi arrived 2 days after Sheroke. She has been planning on coming to Peru for months now! Wow is she a God send. She has totally blessed my socks off! I love her to pieces. We are literally like the same person. It is almost scary, like all the unusual things about me are like the same with her. For example, we are both allergic to metal, we have the same facial expressions, we both lose things all the time, we are both disorganized, both super flexible and are not super into "schedules," we both have like stalked our favorite musicians, both don't like the word blouse, and the list could go on and on. It is crazy how God has matched us up together. More than us being so much alike, she is just amazing!

She is great with kids, will do anything , she even cleaned the bathroom for me last Sunday because we had company coming over and time was running out (that is a servant because everyone that walks in our door seems like they always go straight to the bathroom), will try any type of food - she is way braver than I am in that area, super flexible, always hangs out and pulls in the kids that are alone or hanging on the outside, always coming up with new ideas on how to reach more people, reached out to a huge group of teenagers on Friday and now we are having a youth night in one of our other Bible study areas, and I could keep going on and on, but anyway she is amazing!

I love both of these girls so much. I am sad Sheroke is gone, but I know the Lord is going to use her wherever she is at. Hopefully the Lord will bring her back to Peru. Keep praying! I am excited for this journey with Jessi that we get to be on for the next 8 months together. Below are some pics of our time together! Thank you Jesus for bringing me a friend, a helper, and a teammate from my own country. You are too good to me.

Yes, we played games at 1 am when Sheroke got back from the airport and we continued that tradition and played games the majority of nights that she was here!

Bogota Columbia - The Nichols' family!!!

I had the great honor and privilege to go and be with my sweet friends the Nichols the first week of them getting to meet their new family in Bogota, Columbia. Let me just tell you Beth and Tyler Nichols are some of the most amazing people I know, and they are amazing parents. I want to back track a little bit to tell you how I met Beth and Tyler. Tyler came to Peru in June 2011 on a mission trip to Peru with FBC Mansfield. He was SO amazing serving in every way possible, always playing with kids. Anyway, through that I got to know the Nichols. When I came home for furlough in May, I got to go over to their house and hear more about their adoption story, we had been keeping in contact since that trip, but I got to hear it from them personally. It was such a beautiful story. I was so excited in all that God was doing in their life. I offered to meet up with them to help them translate in the beginning if they wanted it. I didn't know if they would really take up on that offer because I know if I was just meeting my kids for the first time I wouldn't want other people hanging around that wasn't family. I was so honored when they told me that they wanted me to come!! What a gift from God.
Here is a blog post that Beth wrote talking a little about the mission trip Tyler took and how it relates to their adoption: http://dinnermesa.wordpress.com/2012/08/page/3/

Anyway, so I missed my flight to Columbia because of stupidity, I got the hour wrong and I only got there one hour before the flight was leaving and it was closed already. I was pretty upset, but it ended up all working out. Anyway, I got there at about 11 o'clock at night the day before Tyler and Beth would meet their precious family. Man are they precious, I can't show you any pictures or tell you their names, but it is such a sweet sweet family!!! Instantly they connected with their parents and started calling them Mami and Papi.

The next 7 days were just precious to watch. Tyler and Beth did a great job of being amazing parents from the beginning. Honestly, they didn't even need me, they were communicating with their kids in Spanish from the very beginning. Each kid has a great personality and are just beautiful. Their are 2 girls and 3 boys. It was fun getting to play with them, watch them with their new family, and just be on this adventure with them.

Bogota is really pretty, you can see Mountains, the sun comes out everyday, their is random rain showers, and the weather goes between hot and cold every day. You never know when you need a jacket. It was so refreshing to have the sun come out everyday and to have it rain, since it NEVER rains here and the sun rarely comes out in winter. Although this winter it has been coming out a lot, God is so good to me. Everything is super expensive in Bogota. I felt like I was in culture shock. It is more expensive than the states. I could not find a market anywhere!!! I asked every taxi I was in about markets, and apparently there was none anywhere close to where I was staying. CRAZY! I know every South American Country is different but I was not expecting it to be so different. I was dying to see a poorer part of Columbia just because that is what I am so used to in Peru and my heart is for the poor places. I think to get to a poorer area you had to drive at least 40 minutes.

Everyone was super nice in Columbia. Everyone is much lighter skinned there and a lot of people have lighter colored hair. I was so excited when one Colombian lady told me that people there could think I was Colombian because I spoke Spanish and I looked like them. That made my day since I totally look like a Gringa here in Peru. Also, they use some other phrases then they do in Peru. They call everyone Senor or Senora which took me off guard, because everyone kept calling me Senora. Here in Peru I am Senorita because I am not married. Normally if you don't know someone you call them Senorita here in Peru to not offend them for being to old. They also do not use the informal "you" which is tu, they only use the word usted, so everything is much more proper. They also use the word Bueno a lot!! Here we used the word bien more. But they use the word bueno which means good/ well a lot! Anyway, it was just interesting for me to see the differences.

The orphanage where Tyler and Beth adopted their precious family was AMAZING. I was blown away. I think it is better orphanage than you would see in the states. There is about 80 kids there right now. It is so amazingly run, with plenty of help, beautiful facilities including: a huge playroom, a computer lab, a library, a small indoor gym, each child has their own bed, a dining room, a room for just sick kids so not to infect the others, a baby room, separated room for all the different age groups, a baby play room etc. Everything was SO clean, all beds made, with a matching pillow, matching bedspreads; i was in shock. It was AMAZING! I am so thankful that the Nichol's family has been there for the past 6 months because it is no doubt that they received exceptional care.

(I was going to post pics of the orphanage, but my computer won't let me for some reason...oh well)

God also did a lot in my own personal life while I was in Columbia:

He did a lot of healing in my life emotionally. I was just in a rut before I went to Columbia, very down, and God totally brought me out of that. All glory to Him.

It was so great to be encouraged by fellow believers: Tyler and Beth and just get to talk with them at night in English about things going on with them and about things going on in Peru. They encouraged me SO much.

He showed me how much I really do love the Peruvian people. I really liked the Colombians, but I missed Peruvians. I feel like Peruvians are so much easier to talk to, and it is so much easier for me to share the gospel here in Peru than it was for me in Columbia with people I meet, yet that is probably because of the area I live in here in Peru and because God has called me here.

I was reminded once again of the value of having a Peruvian teammate. I had to go and run some errands at times for the Nichols, but I really didn't know where anything was. I knew the language so I could ask questions, but it just made me so thankful for Nicchola because he knows where everything is in Peru and can always help me. Even before we worked together, he would help us find the places where we needed to go etc. I felt a little lost trying to figure out where to go buy things etc in Columbia.  Also, it also showed me how much I have learned in Peru because going somewhere alone and going shopping or whatever is no big deal now. God has brought me a long way, from not knowing one thing about Peru to being able to live daily life now without any problems. God is so good.

I missed the poorer life. It was amazing because there were so many imported foods from America in Columbia like Campbell's soup, taco shells, and so many other things in just regular grocery stores, yet even with all that I missed living in the poorer life. God really did show me that the things I miss from the States at times, do not compare to not being able to live in Ventanilla where there is nothing from the states, but there are beautiful people here that God has called me to minister to.

God showed me the wonderful opportunity I have to lead here. Getting to take a step back from my normal life in Peru for a week, showed me what an awesome opportunity I have to get to lead people here. I take it for granted and it something that I should be so thankful for. It is something I should delve into way more and really really invest in the people that I have the chance to invest in everyday here. There are so many people that need Christ's love here, and I have the privilege and opportunity to be a part of that. God showed me what a great privilege I have that I can be a leader and invest in the lives of so many people here and that I really need to always being investing in people's lives.

It was a phenomenal week,  I am so blessed that I got to spend to spend an entire week with the Nichols' family. I really want to post pictures, but I can't until everything is finalized. I don't really have pics of Columbia since I was really busy hanging out with the kids, that is really all I have pics in Columbia is those 5 precious faces with their precious parents. Would you please commit to praying for Tyler and Beth Nichols as they are still waiting to go home from Columbia? Would you pray that things would finish up on Monday so they can go home this week. They have been in Columbia now for about 40 days and they are ready to go home and start their life with their family there. Follow their amazing story on their blog at: http://dinnermesa.wordpress.com

To Him be all the glory!

Sweet Beth and Tyler right before they are about to meet their precious family!!! They are such a blessing to my life and to their 5 new kids, and really everyone they come in  contact with!

1 day, 3 beautiful servants hearts, eternal impact

At the end of July I had the great opportunity and privilege to work with 3 amazing girls from Tyler, TX. Christi, Deanda, and Rachael. Christi had come last year and worked 3 days with Soma Church here in Ventanilla. They were such an amazing group and helped us really get plugged into our neighborhood, and she decieded to come back again to Peru this year and bring 2 more friends. They were mainly working in Chorillos with my good friends  Shaun and Amanda Wissmann and Nancy Lane, but Christi scheduled to come to Ventanilla for one day. I am so glad that they came! They were such an encouragement to me. They were so real and so genuine. I could so tell that they cared not only about the people here but about how I was doing as a missionary. In one day I felt like I had them known them so much longer because we had such deep real conversations. They really poured into my life, and it was so what I needed at the time. The Holy Spirit just so moved through each one of them and so ministered to me. More than that though they poured into so many people's lives that day in Ventanilla.

We picked them up in Chorillos at 8 am for a day packed with adventure. Once we got to Ventanilla 2 hours later, we took a little stroll through a local market so they could see what a typical market was like. We also bought some food for Aquillino's family (the man who was dying of cancer who we have been ministering to for 2 years).

Then we headed to go visit Aquilino and his family to pray for healing for Aquilino. It was a precious time with other believers to get to sit together and petition for this precious man. It was just a sweet time to watch these girl's care so much for someone that they had just met. Aquilino was in the back bedroom because he was too sick to be with anyone. Dora, his wife, Aquilino's parents, Nicchola, the girls, and myself just prayed for Aquilino's healing and for him to come to know Jesus if he already didn't know Him. It was beautiful when Deanda started leading us in amazing grace while we were sitting on the floor in Aquilino's living room, and we just got to enter into a time of worship.

I am going to kind of go off the path about the day with the girls and give you an update on Aquilino. He passed away at the beginning of August while I was in Columbia. This was very hard on me because I had gotten very close to Aquilino over the past 2 years. The Lord is so good, he had put it on my heart that I had to write Aquilino a letter explaining the gospel before I left. I had talked to Aquilino before about the gospel, but I knew I needed to explain it one more time. I was not sure if he had a personal saving relationship with the Lord or not based off some of the conversations that we had in the past. Aquilino had had cancer for 5 years, so it wasn't really expected that he would die the week I was gone, but the Lord just made it clear to me that I needed to write that letter. When I talked to Nicchola during the week I was in Columbia, he told me that Dora said he had read the letter over and over again and Aquilino told Dora to tell me that he said, "not to worry." When I talked to Dora later, she said that he was so excited that I had remembered him and he was so excited to open the letter and that he read it before he got really really sick, while he was still in his right mind. Although, I don't know for sure where Aquilino stood with his relationship with Jesus Christ, I am so thankful that the Lord gave him another opportunity to hear the good news and accept it if he chose to. Please pray for Dora, his wife, and his four children: Bryan, Arnold, Esneyder, and Linda. Please pray that God will provide financially for them and comfort them during this time of hard loss.

After our time with Dora and her family we came back and practiced the skit we were going to do about Adam and Eve. It was quite hilarious because I forgot since I was just going to be the tree and not having any moving or speaking parts that I could translate for the girls behind the tree. Sometimes I get so confused when I have to go back and forth between languages. For so long now there has hardly been anyone to talk to in English, so switching back in forth between the languages was difficult for me. Anyway, we had a fun time practicing the skit together. Nicchola was the narrator and had to talk in a girl's voice for Eve. Deanda was a hilarious serpent.  Christi did a great job of being Adam and acting like a boy. lol Rachael was a great Eve. We ate a quick lunch and enjoyed some delicious fresh avocados. Then we started taking everything downstairs for the event.

We had a neighborhood outreach event for everyone in our neighborhood and invited a lot of kids from the 2 schools nearby. It was a beautiful time together. The Lord is so good. It could have been crazy because there were only 5 of us, but in the end everyone that could have come from our discipleship group also came out to help. It was just perfect because instead of all the kids coming just at once, they staggered in by groups after school had gotten out for them or after they had gone home and eaten lunch etc.. So it was never too overwhelming. We had brought out miscellaneous crafts that we had left over from other teams and let the kids do that. We had a GREAT turn out of adults come by (around 20), which was super great. They made string bracelets. We did the skit and gospel presentation twice, gave out snacks (a muffin and a glass of coke), and bracelets using symbols to explain the gospel. Since so many more people kept coming, I would take the new people aside and share the gospel with them using the symbol bracelets and then give them a snack, and they would go and make crafts. Everyone had a great time. The girls did such an excellent job communicating as much as they could since I could not really translate for them since I was the one in charge of sharing the gospel with all the new people that came. In total, about 180 people came, yet it was not chaotic which is a HUGE blessing from the Lord. The girls were so fun doing crazy dance moves to the Christian rap music that was playing, helping the kids with their art projects, played the hand game with them,    and so much more. One special moment that I did not get to see was when Rachael was holding a little girl and praying over her. Beautiful. It was such a neat event to get to connect with people in my neighborhood and the nearby neighborhoods. It was great to get to connect better with some adults that live around as well. The Lord is so good and sovereign, I was worried that we would not be able to handle the amount of people that potentially could come, yet the Lord allowed the perfect amount of people to come in just the right way, so that ALL got to hear the good news of Jesus, yet it wasn't disorganized or overwhelming. All glory to Him.

Then after we cleaned up the stuff outside, we got ready to go to the Community.  The girls wanted to work in the baby house, which turned out to be perfect because we only had about an hour. God is so good and we were able to show up just when it was time to help feed the babies. There are about 35 babies in the house, so the 2 on staff workers and the teens that help in that house have their hands full literally. I am not really a baby person, but it was so cool to hear from them how much the time in that house impacted them. They really loved on those babies, fed them, sang with them, held them, and loved them. I know some of the girls have a heart for adoption, and I can't wait what God does in that area in their lives in the future.

Then we headed back to Chorillos. We had a good time stopping to eat some Chinese Peruvian food and got to enjoy chatting on the way back home. They also prayed over me in the car and that was so special. The whole day was a glorious victorious day from the Lord. It was full of encouragement from fellow believers, making new friends, and full of ministering to many who do not know Jesus. All glory to God.

Bible study update and YOUTH NIGHT!

Well things are going pretty good as far as our weekly Bible studies go. Numbers are always up and down, never too consistent, but 2 weeks ago in our neighborhood Bible study on Sunday afternoon, we had 41 people at Bible study. 12 came including Nicchola and Fernando, and 29 children! God is so good!!!

This picture is taken from my house looking down on our neighborhood Bible study
Learning about Jesus being the Door.  Each group is entering with a banner of something good they did to  get to Heaven, but it won't fit, since only through Faith in Jesus can we get to Heaven.
Normally every Sunday, we have a Bible verse competition between the boys and the girls.

Playing Bible jeopardy
We also had our first youth night at my house 2 weeks ago on a Friday night and we had about 15 youth come. Another miracle! Our ministry is mainly with children, a few adults, and few youth. We invited youth from several of our Bible studies, but youth only came from my neighborhood. The majority of youth that came do not attend our Bible study! It was such a blessing. We played games for several hours, ate snacks, and we did a drama that shared the gospel. It was such a fun night. One of my neighbors who is part of the a Peruvian cult came. It was such a joy to get to know him and for him to hear the gospel. Our desire is to start doing these youth nights once a month. Please pray for our youth that they will start getting involved and come to know Jesus!

First time for these boys to be a part of anything we have done here. So excited about what God is doing in their lives.

Huaral is going good as well. We go there every Wednesday afternoon, we first have Bible studies with the adults of the family that we originally started with. Anywhere from 2 to 4 adults come. Eva an adult who has been coming for a while now, because a Christian 2 weeks ago!!! All glory to God. She flat out asked how she could become a Christian, and she wanted to pray and ask Jesus to be her Savior and Lord right then and there. She said after she felt basically that her weight was gone and she was so happy. I can see a change in her immediately. Then we have Bible study with the kids in the pueblo. We range in numbers here as well but we have had up to 40 but we can have 15 up to 30 kids on a regular basis. The kids are super sweet and we meet out on the dirt street and praise Jesus and learn about him together. It really is beautiful.

The kids love dressing up and acting out the story!

Eva just became a Christian 2 weeks ago! Glory to God!

Last week, we had the opportunity to go early and make a typical mountain food with the family in Huaral that we always have Bible study with. It was so much fun and so interesting. This mountain food is called pachamanca, basically it is lots of different types of vegetables and any kind of meat you choose, we chose beef because we didn't want to be too crazy. The food is cooked underground on hot rocks. You have to dig a hole, heat up the rocks, don't worry we cleaned the rocks first - not to US standards but kind of...... the people wanted to get the water from the river where the sewage and trash goes, but Praise be to God, that the river was practically dry, so we cleaned the rocks with well water. After about one rock was dipped into the water it was already disgusting and was not really good to clean the other 10 rocks we cleaned with that water without dumping it out, but Oh well. Also the tarp we were going to lay the clean rocks on was cleaned in the sewage water....but no big deal the rocks were heated up big time to kill any germs or at least that is what we were all hoping! Then once the rocks are hot, all the vegetables ready, you put the stuff on the rocks, and then cover the food with big banana leaves, and then tarps, and then cover it back up with dirt and let it cook for 30 minutes under the ground. It actually is really good. Definitely not clean in the least, but FUN!

As I was taking a part of that morning, I realized how much God had grown me just in the small things: that I could stand and get 5 kilos of meat from the market without getting sick, or watch raw meat being dipped into the green spice sauce without being washed, and dip the vegetables into the same meat and not just flip out that I was going to die. You know just the little things.

It was so great to get to spend some time bonding with this family and showing them that we really care about them as a whole. It was neat to all work together and make this food and just have fun with this family. I hope to do things like this more often with families in all of our different Bible studies.
Digging the hole
"Washing" the rocks

Shucking the corn
Cutting over 4 pounds of onions. Oh man did we cry.

Our job was to dip all the things into this green sauce that made our hands smell for a week.
Putting the food in the hole.
Taking off the banana leaves
Getting the food out, it was super hot and burned your hands. SO I let the experts do it and just took out 2 pieces.
Yep, all the food is out of the hole!
Finished product!

Our Calle 10 Bible study is smaller now that we are in the school year. It is probably our smallest Bible study with about an average of 10 kids coming but sometimes can be more. One of the girls Gema became a Christian in that Bible study a couple of months ago. It is neat because there are adults around that are selling things, and it is cool to watch them being interested in what is going on in the sidewalk right in front of them. It is also cool to have deeper relationships now with a lot of the parents who work in the market who send their kids. There has been interest with 2 of the moms about learning about what we are teaching. I do feel like relationships are definitely growing in that place which is great! We met a new family that is from the jungle who live nearby but far enough where they definitely have to make an effort to come to our sidewalk Bible study in front of the market, yet they are faithful to come every week with their aunt. It is just so neat. They know a lot about the Bible, so I am thinking they were part of a Christian church in the jungle. Anyway, please pray for the boys in this area. A lot of them used to come but now they are "too cool for school" and have really bad attitudes. Please pray that God would draw their hearts to himself and bring them back to learn about Him, and that they would know him personally one day!

Playing the hand game, where the gospel is shared through a song.
Our Monday night Bible study in Ancon has turned out to be really neat. For over a year now we have been meeting with just a mom and her daughter. The mom has become a Christian, and they have just recently decided to move into her mom's house. Therefore, her brother has started coming to Bible study. He is very confused about a personal relationship with Jesus but seeking. Would you please pray for understanding for Him? We also got to study with their mom who also does not know Jesus. She has hardly been at her own house lately because she was just diagnosed with cancer. Will you pray for her healing and that she would come to know the Savior. It is just cool how God is calling this entire family to come to know him, just like he calls each and every one of us into a relationship with him. The decision is ours if we will accept him through faith or not. We were having Bible study this past Monday night and talking about how statues and pictures of god are not God. It made my heart happy when Jackeline, the women who is a Christian now, said  to me about her brother, " I told him that." It is so cool to see her grow in her faith. Please pray for discernment for myself and all our team that we would know how to share the gospel most accurately in this culture where there is so much confusion, lies, and so many cults. Please pray for us to be bold, wise as serpents, yet gentle as doves.

We have Bible study on Tuesdays and Saturdays with many people as well. I cannot go into too much detail about this one for confidentiality reasons. Please pray for discernment for us to know what to do. These Bible studies are filled with much spiritual warfare and rejection. At the same time we are still having Bible study with many precious people that are eager to learn. Please pray that doors will be wide open so that people in this place would know the Truth about Jesus.
